Faith

Faith is not a big feeling. It is a small, steady turning of the heart toward God — the kind of trust that quietly shapes a life over decades.

What the Bible means by faith

The clearest definition of faith in the Bible comes in Hebrews 11:1 — “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” That single sentence keeps two things together that we usually pull apart: faith is confident, and faith is unseen. It is grounded, not naive; it is trusting, not gullible.

Elsewhere in Scripture, faith is not primarily about certainty of ideas. It is about the direction of a person’s life. When Jesus praised someone’s “great faith,” He was almost always talking about someone who quietly kept coming to Him with their need — the centurion in Matthew 8, the Canaanite mother in Matthew 15, blind Bartimaeus in Mark 10. Faith moves.

Faith is not the absence of doubt

One of the kindest things Scripture ever does for us is refuse to shame honest doubt. When a father in Mark 9 cried out, “Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief,” Jesus did not lecture him. He helped him. Faith and doubt often live in the same heart. What Scripture asks is not that we pretend our doubts do not exist; it asks that we bring them, honestly, to God.

Faith in ordinary days

Most Christian faith is not lived in dramatic moments. It is lived on ordinary Tuesdays — in small acts of trust when nothing feels resolved. Faith looks like continuing to pray after months of silence. It looks like being kind when we don’t feel like it. It looks like choosing to hope again after disappointment.

How to grow in faith

  1. Feed it. Faith grows through the word of God (Romans 10:17). Even a small daily habit of reading Scripture nourishes it.
  2. Practice it. Faith grows through use. Take one small step of trust that you would not otherwise take.
  3. Share it. Faith is meant to be lived in community. Even one friend who prays with you can steady a season.
  4. Bring your doubts. Say them out loud to God. Faith is not fragile; He can handle honest questions.

A short devotional prayer

Father, I want to trust You more than I do. Where my faith is small, help it. Where I am pretending, forgive me. Where I am tired of waiting, meet me. Give me courage today for the one small step of faith right in front of me. In Jesus’ name, amen.
