The heart of the Christian message

The Christian gospel — the “good news” — is not primarily a set of rules or a spiritual technique. It is news about what God has done. In love, He entered our world in Jesus. He lived the human life we were meant to live. He died in our place. He rose again. And He offers, to any who will receive it, a full and undeserved welcome home.

Paul summarizes it in one sentence: “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God” (Ephesians 2:8).

Grace, not performance

The most quietly revolutionary word in the New Testament is “grace.” It means favor we did not earn and cannot pay back. Every other religion in the ancient world assumed that gods were pleased by human performance. The Christian gospel says something different: God is not waiting for us to be good enough. He came to us before we were.

This is why Christian faith produces gratitude rather than pride. There is nothing to boast about; everything is received.

How does someone receive it?

Paul writes: “If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved” (Romans 10:9). There is no complicated ceremony, no long checklist. There is simply turning — from trying to save yourself to trusting the one who already has.
